Below is a listing of the main characters (play a really important
role in the novel), the important characters (many events won't
happen without them), the other characters who appear in the novel
and finally characters which are only mentioned in the novel :
- Main characters:
- Dr. Jason Allison Jr., Terran medical doctor with
multiple personalities; lived with the Trailmen for eight years as a child,
later spent five years in the Spacemen's Orphanage in Thendara.
- Jay Allison, Jason's split personality; doesn't remember
anything of the years spent with the Trailmen and in the orphanage.
- Kyla Rainéach, a Free Amazon mountain guide from
Thendara.
- Important characters:
- Regis Hastur, heir to
Lord Hastur, the Regent of the Comyn.
- Lerrys Ridenow, a Serrais Comyn lord, Regis's distant
cousin.
- Old-one, leader of the Trailemn of the North Nest.
- Other characters:
- Randall Forth, Director of the Medical Department in Thendara Spaceport.
- Buck Kendrick, Terran helicopter pilot.
- Rafe Scott, half
Terran, half Darkovan member of the expedition.
- Hjalmar, Garrin and
Vadro, guides; Darkovan brothers from the mountains.
- Carrho, a trailman of the North Nest.
- Thurmond, the Terran Legate at Thendara.

the only survivor of which was Jason.
